WISEST THING.

In an S.S.S 3 mathematics class, the teacher was taking a topic that the students find rather too hard. After enduring the torture for while John raised up his hand to ask a question, the teacher permitted him to speak.

JOHN: “Sir, the topic is very difficult, I don’t understand it at all, please sir is it part of our syllabus?’

TEACHER:”Actually, John, it is not, but it is a topic that you will encounter in the university, it will be an advantage for you then if you know it now”.

JOHN: “In that case sir, then you can count me out because I have no intention of going to a university, not now.”

TEACHER: “Why!, John you are a very brilliant and promising lad, that is not a wise decision to take”

JOHN: “Sir, am sorry, for me it in fact the wisest thing, considering the prevailing reality”.

TEACHER: “How do you mean?”

JOHN: “Thank you sir, you see I came this far in order to know how to read, write, calculate, communicate, and interact with people. After my WAEC, I will go to my uncle in Ladipo Market to learn the auto spare parts business for two years, from there I will proceed to learn about tokunbo vehicles trade, in four years time I will have my own spare parts shop and also be able to buy and sell a few cars, in about six years I will be fully established to some extent. By then l will be able to employ graduates to manage and grow my business for me, while I go to school with comfort and leisure without the stress of JAMB, enrol for a simple degree and master program possibly on on-line or Open University, go for P.HD if I like. So give or take in say 12-15 years from today, I will be a successful auto dealer, employing even my classmates. And also an educated elite.”

JONATHAN vs. AMAECHI: PATIENCE! JUDITH!. CALL YOUR HUSBANDS TO ORDER IMMEDIATELY!

This matter has lingered for far too long and it is becoming a national embarrassment, and obviously portraying the nation in a bad light. this greedy battle for supremacy between these brothers has a subtle tendency of causing far reaching and deep-rooted havoc, because in my view, this fight is responsible for the NGF fracas, the Rivers state problem, the PDP frictions, and I foresee it degenerating into dimensions of anarchy and violence, it is capable of splitting the south-south region, possibly consuming the families, clans, local governments and future descendants of Amaechi and Jonathan. It could cause high voltage tensions in the Niger Delta that will dwarf the previous militancy and restiveness that the region and nation just came out from.

“I foresee it degenerating into dimensions of anarchy and violence, it is capable of splitting the south-south region, possibly consuming the families, clans, local governments and future descendants of Amaechi and Jonathan”

I therefore call on the wives of these ‘myopic’ men to call their husbands to order. Patience and Judith, you are the only ones that can safe the situation now, you know your husbands, you know their moods and temperaments, their dreams and ambitions,(both selfish and noble), only you can tell them the truth, the people lining up behind them don’t have their interest or that of their families at heart, I tell you these politicians that your husbands are romancing are snakes and vampires ,they won’t bat an eyelid if circumstance demands they sacrifice your husbands in order to satisfy or  their selfish political ambitions, Your lecturer and businessman husbands are not politicians and they don’t understand the depth and density of the  Nigerian Political Jungle, they are treading unfamiliar grounds!.
Both of you  must first come together as the virtuous women that you are, reconcile with each other, and agree to seat your men down and talk to them; before they are transformed into beasts, I know these are not the handsome men that you agreed to marry years back, and they are fast becoming what you will on longer recognise if you leave them to themselves. Talk to them individually in your bedrooms, and afterwards bring the two together in closed door family chat, just the four of you. Settle the matter, when you achieve that feat, you will discover that all the vultures crowding around them will back off. And you will only appreciate what you have done if only you can imagine what the hostility could have led to.

“PATIENCE AND JUDITH,PLEASE CALL YOUR HUSBANDS TO ORDER,AWAY FROM THE PATH OF SELF DESTRUCTION, FOR THE VAMPIRES AND VULTURES AROUND THEM ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN BLOOD,DEATH AND CARCASSES , THANK YOU!”

NDI IGBO AND MARGINALISATION

“Marginalization” l have read and heard this word so many times in less than two weeks, that I had to look it up in my dictionary;
Prevent from having attention or power: to take or keep somebody or something away from the centre of attention, influence, or power, to relegate to an unimportant position within a society or group.
Relating this to the context in which it is used by the Igbo to describe their plight, I find it very touching, to say the least. Looking at the history of leadership in the country, our brothers have been truly marginalised unjustly. I salute their courage and persistence to continually ask for their long over-due rights, and this should not be seen as seeking favour, because their positive contributions to the growth and development of this great Nation since independence far outweighs the reason for which they are being denied a shot at the presidency, for the sake of justice, equity and common sense, our brothers should be given 2015.
Having said that, I will say to my igbo brothers, ‘ pause for a moment, look inward and recount, take stock, and remember your history and journey to this very day. In my candid opinion, I think you have fared very well in spite of all odds and storms’. There is a deep admiration of your achievements in the hearts of many Nigerian but we  conceal and sometimes talk about in negative light as though we don’t care, but let me tell you today, we  secretly desire your kind of spirit, perseverance, strength, optimism, business acumen and drive. Forget our pretence; some people are just not comfortable with  the fact that you guys are smart, sharp and quick. You are the men! If you don’t belief me,  go on strike for one week and see if you will not humble the entire nation.
to my igbo brothers, ‘ pause for a moment, look inward and recount, take stock, and remember your history and journey to this very day. In my candid opinion, I think you have fared very well in spite of all odds and storms’

Giving you 2015, just and right as it may be, truly will not solve the problem of marginalisation, as it is being experienced by the common man. The root of our dilemma in this country is bad leadership, what exactly do you think putting an Igbo man or woman in Aso Rock will bring you apart from the relief that your zone has also ruled, how do you think it will impact and better the lot of an average Ndi Igbo? Going by history and trend in this nation, all the zones that ruled, what became of their people? What improvement did it bring to the masses?
The Northerners who somehow for whatever reason believe that it is their birthright to rule, how has their long years of leadership helped the average Hausa or Fulani? Don’t you see them everywhere; they are the fetchers of water and hewers of wood, in and outside of their states. The westerners are not different, what most people have are through personal efforts.WE ARE ALL MARGINALISED!

What  is of greater importance  is how to collectively change this Nation, correct the wrongs, spew out the viper and vampire leaders, shake all the beasts into the fire, construct and constitute a better, vibrant, transparent, people-focused leadership structure that will serve us and coming generations. That is the common goal and vision we must all as a people  aspire to achieve, it is a noble mission for which posterity and entire humanity will give a standing ovation long after we have passed on.
Lets revive and realise the dreams of our founding fathers, lets put joy in the hearts of our past heroes and laughter in the mouths of  unborn generations.
LETS MAKE HISTORY,  BECOME LEGENDS!.

DIGs TO HEAD POLICE ZONAL COMMANDS: MIKE OKIRO’S POLICE RESTRUCTURE MASTERPLAN.

“In keeping with the president’s invitation to me to forward my contribution to the restructuring of the Nigerian Police for greater efficiency, the commission recommends the deployment of DIGs to the zonal headquarters. You will agree with me that this is one way of building democratic institutions and a way of bringing policing nearer to the people for safer and secured environment for sustainable development”
-Mr. Mike Okiro,Chairman,Police Service Commission.
Obviously, Mr. Okiro is not aware, does not understand, cannot appreciate the quantum of decay in the Nigeria Police Force, or he is benefiting immensely from the status quo; and I tilt towards the latter. Because I find  hard to understand why Mr. Okiro, who was a policeman all his life, who has served under virtually every government that has ruled this nation, with all his experience to come up with this “swoop AIGs for DIGs” as the restructure recommendation that will bring greater efficiency ,discipline, effective monitoring and supervision in the Police Force.
As a citizen, who has interacted with the police both on the road  and at their stations, I can without fear of contradiction say that the problems of the police are literacy, professionalism, technological proficiency, welfare and equipments amongst others, I will dwell on these few for want of space and time, you can help by also identifying other areas that needs fixing in the NPF, perhaps, soon, Mr. Okiro or his advisers will stumble on this piece.
From personal interaction with the police and through popular opinion pools and street gist,I have come to the dogmatic conclusion that more than 70% of the men and officers of the Nigeria Police are stack illiterates, we see them everywhere; on the roads ,police stations, and on TV. Most of them are extremely unlettered, untamed, and annoyingly ill-mannered. This to a very great extent is the reflection of the recruitment process into the police force; I see boys and girls in uniform and wonder if these children passed through secondary school at all! Go to any police station the lingual-franc a is Pidgin English from the gate, to the counter, to the IPO’s desk right straight to the table of the DPO!
The recruitment process and requirements should be reviewed, sanitize the rank and file, retire the illiterates who qualify for retirement, and lay off the ones that do not. Clean up and raise the qualification bar to a minimum of OND for junior officers and first degree minimum for senior officers.
Secondly, the training, without any doubt, from what we see, police training lacks any form of professionalism. The training curriculum and facilities of the police college should be reviewed, updated and upgraded in international standard .Train recruits on relevant, modern and customized policing strategies. Organize regular, strategic, value-based and ethics seminars, conferences and retreats for both junior and senior officers, invite expatriates when necessary. Concentrate more on intellectual empowerment than on physical and paramilitary training; let it be the major parameter for evaluation and promotions. Don’t promote an officer because he killed one or two armed robbers, because when he need another promotion, he will find something to kill, e.g protesting students, innocent citizens, etc and make it look like he is the hero.
In modern day policing, the expediency of ICT must not be taken for granted, officers without IT proficiency have no business being in the police force, it is an aberration to have police stations and departments without computers, internet,CCTV,modern  and sophisticated communication devices, up-to-date record keeping software and hardware, impenetrable and eagle eyed monitored premises, a police station should be a people-friendly fortress.terrorist should think more than twice before storming a police station talk-less a command headquarters.
Police, teachers, and doctors should be among the highest paid employees of any responsible government, but sorry for Nigeria. Unfortunately for our police, while teachers and doctors can go on strike, police can’t. I strongly advocate for a better welfare package for our police officers, this will reduce greater the desperation, aggression and compromise we see in the force today. There should be a life insurance cover of say N500,000 for junior officers and N5million for senior officer, I also suggest an health insurance scheme; no matter how little, for officers, their spouses and dependents.

“Give an hungry man a gun, the first thing that will come to his mind is  hunting, since the policeman can’t go into the forest and start hunting for games, he will rent out his gun to criminals, or use it to harass, intimidate and extort money from the people he signed up to protect”

Equipments is also one area that needs attention ,with our police uniforms, boots, batons guns ,vehicles, computers, radios, telephones, internet problems should be promptly addressed, we are tired of seeing policemen in dirty uniforms and bathroom slippers, obsolete guns, and rickety patrol vans. It’s very embarrassing.
Mr. Mike okiro, if you truly have the interest of the Nigeria Police Force at heart, I advise you think about these things and take appropriate and deliberate steps towards proffering lasting solution, take time to do an independent investigation in order to understand what in on ground and the level of devastation in the force, and don’t politicize the issue for posterity will judge, do the police some good now that you can.
 I HAVE SPOKEN!!!
